Out and About in Tangermünde

With its unique history, towers and gates, half-timbered houses and twisting alleyways, there is plenty to discover in our town!

Here, you can find medieval, red brick Gothic buildings and almost perfectly-preserved town fortifications which provide a beautiful view over the Elbe floodplains. Take a walk among the half-timbered houses and the small, winding alleyways of the old town and feel transported back to another moment in time. Small, unique shops invite visitors to browse their wares, while cafés are the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by.

Tours of the town

Join the night watchmen on a tour of the town, where you can listen to thousands of years of local history, wind your way through twisting alleyways, and experience a true sense of history.

St. Stephan’s Church

St. Stephan’s Church is a Gothic hall church which dates back to the 14th-17th century. It boasts the highest tower in the Altmark region. For lovers of organ music, we are happy to arrange for 30-minute organ concerts to be played on the Schererorgel [Scherer Organ], named for Hans Scherer the Younger, the man who built it. Dating back to the 16th century, this is one of the 10 most valuable organs in Europe.

The Chapter Tower

Once a tower inhabited by margraves from the House of Ascania in the 12th century, today, the Chapter Tower is an observation tower which offers breathtaking views over the Elbe and the surrounding floodplains.

Town Museum

This museum, located in the old town hall with its imposing gable roofs dating back to the year 1430, is a wealth of facts and stories about the town.

Castle Museum

Located in the town’s oldest surviving house, the “Schlossfreiheit” [building exempt from paying taxes and charges to the castle authorities] was built in 1543. Here, you can find out everything there is to know about Tangermünde Castle. Interesting exhibitions which are put on display during the summer months are yet another reason to drop by.

The Salzkirche [“Salt Church”]

Dating back to the 14th–15th century, the St. Elisabeth Hospital Chapel regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions and talks.

Zeitzeugmuseum [Museum of Old Things]

Home to a lovingly-collected selection of interesting and curious objects. Old vehicles, furniture, toys and much more can be found in this small, private museum.
